Atmel is a leading maker of microcontrollers, which are used in a wide range of products, from computers and mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, e-readers) to automobile motor control systems, television remote controls, and solid-state lighting. In addition, the company offers touchscreen controllers and sensors, nonvolatile memory devices, and radio frequency (RF) and wireless components. Its chips are used worldwide in consumer, communications, industrial, military, and networking applications. Most of Atmel's sales come from customers outside the US. In mid-2016 the company was bought by Microchip, a chip maker, for $3.6 billion.
