Hallador Energy Company
Despite its Harry Potter-like name, Hallador Petroleum could find no magic in oil and natural gas exploration and production -- just a lot of hard and dirty work. It therefore decided to focus on its coal operations. Hallador sells coal from its Carlisle Mine in Indiana to three utilities in the Midwest. First commercial production began at the mine in 2007. That year it sold 972,500 tons at an average price of $28 per ton. Hallador has recoverable coal reserves of 36 million tons. It is exploring the possibility of other contracts with a number of coal purchasers.
