Much ogled for its robust energy supply, not-for-profit Oglethorpe Power Corporation is one of the largest electricity cooperatives in the US, with contracts to supply wholesale power to 38 member/owners (making up most of Georgia's electric distribution cooperatives) until 2050. Oglethorpe's member/owners, which also operate as not-for-profits, serve 1.8 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers (or about 4.2 million people). The company has a generating capacity of more than 7,700 MW from fossil-fueled, nuclear, and hydroelectric power plants. Oglethorpe has stakes in 31 generating units. In addition, the company purchases power from other suppliers, and it markets power on the wholesale market.
