CytoSorbents (formerly Medasorb Technologies) gets the gunk out of blood. The medical device firm is developing blood purification systems for treating patients with infections and kidney disease. Its top priority is its clinical-stage CytoSorb device, which draws a patient's blood, pumps it through a cartridge with cleansing polymers, and returns it to the patient in a closed loop; the company is developing the device as a treatment for sepsis (or blood infection) in collaboration with UPMC. CytoSorbents is also working on BetaSorb, a similar system for treating chronic kidney failure in combination with dialysis; Fresenius Medical Care has agreed to help market the device, if approved.
