The externally managed, closed-end business development company (BDC) was formed in 2011 to invest in low- to mid-market companies that earn between $10 million and $150 million per year. (BDCs are exempt from paying federal income tax as long as they distribute 90% of profits back to shareholders.) Fidus has provided mezzanine debt and equity financing to some 30 companies representing a range of industries, typically investing between $5 million and $15 million for each transaction.
