Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc.
When the luau bonfires go out, Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI) keeps the islands lit up. HEI is the holding company for Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) and some non-utility businesses. HECO (along with its utility subsidiaries Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light) serves about 457,800 customers (95% of the population) as the sole public electricity provider on the islands of Hawaii, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, and Oahu. The utilities account for the bulk of HEI's sales and have a generating capacity of about 2,224 MW. On the non-utility side it operates American Savings Bank, with 56 retail branches in the state (although company is selling this business).
