Sivida's taking silicon out of the valley and bringing it to the laboratory. The company is developing products using BioSilicon, a proprietary porous silicon material nanostructured to have honeycomb-shaped (and therefore design-flexible) pores roughly ten atoms wide. pSivida is applying BioSilicon as a drug delivery technology for cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and brachytherapy (applying radioisotopes to cancerous tumors). The company also has developed and commercialized ophthalmic treatments using its Durasert technology, which uses miniature injectable drug delivery systems to treat eye diseases.
